It Couldn't Happen Here: Review

Not exactly A HARD DAY'S NIGHT, this film brings British pop duo the Pet Shop Boys (Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant) and their music to the big screen in a surreal travelog. The narrative is nearly nonexistent. Tennant visits an English seaside resort and selects some postcards, which conjure an assortment of strange memories as he and Lowe embark on a cross-country journey. Along the way they encounter some naughty nuns; a blind priest, Ackland; a businessman who is oblivious to the flames raging on his body; a ventriloquist, Hunt, and his loquacious dummy; and a deranged pilot, Dickson. Tennant and Lowe, who say next to nothing, are as unaffected by the metaphysical ramblings of the other characters as they are by the absurd, often catastrophic, occurrences they witness. Not surprisingly, the soundtrack is full of Pet Shop Boys tunes, including "West End Girls" and "Always on My Mind." Aspiring to make IT COULDN'T HAPPEN HERE into more than a feature-length music video, director Jack Bon arrives at more than a few arresting images and fortunately makes no attempt to illustrate the Boys' songs literally. Instead, he creates an alternative reality that has more to do with dreams than the waking world. Yet, despite its often captivating cinematography, IT COULDN'T HAPPEN HERE is painfully slow moving and frequently just plain dull. leave a comment
