Van Cleef is an idealistic scientist who communicates with Venus on his ham radio until one of the Venusians ends up outside his window. The misled scientist believes these cone-shaped aliens with arms and obnoxious overbites will bring peace to Earth. Instead they begin a plan to transform mankind. With the aid of "bat-mites" the Venusians attempt to turn everyone into zombielike slaves. Van Cleef's wife (Garland) is killed, and, in angry retaliation, the scientist takes a blow-torch to the critter. Graves turns out to be the picture's ultimate hero, fending off the invasion. Produced and directed by Corman, the film displayed his belief that "in science-fiction films the monster should always be bigger than the leading lady." The monster, played by the film's special effects man, Blaisdell, is undoubtedly larger than Garland. This better than average flying saucer film was followed in 1966 with the inferior remake ZONTAR, THE THING FROM VENUS. leave a comment
