The first of the Schneer-produced films featuring Ray Harryhausen's trademark special-effects animation. Naval submarine captain Tobey spots a mutant killer octopus in the mid-Pacific and tries to blow it to smithereens. Before he can do so, the feisty monster sojourns in San Francisco, where it destroys the Golden Gate Bridge and the Market Street Tower before taking to the city's streets. A nuclear torpedo finally defeats the creature. Look real close at the octopus, and count the tentacles. That's right, only five! Domergue, at one time the subject of a massive publicity build-up by a smitten Howard Hughes, is the only name player in the cast. leave a comment
