In films rain almost always is synonymous with depression, and this picture is no exception. The residents of London's dreary East End become upset when they get word that former neighbor McCallum has escaped from prison. He comes back to town and pays a visit to his former girl, now
married and the mother of grown children. She harbors the criminal until he is found by the police. The tone gets even darker when the girl attempts suicide. As grim as the subject may be, the picture offers a thoughtful portrayal of the fugitive, and relations between neighbors.
