Scott is the best thing about this touch-and-go film, taken from Hemingway's posthumously published novel of 1970 (his widow, Mary, released the novel, which also was a mistake). The story is basically a rehash of an earlier, better-told, less self-indulgent tale, To Have and Have Not. Scott is a distinguished artist living on Bimini in the Bahamas. War. Freedom. Loyalty. Love. Manhood. Ernest Hemingway's most powerful themes are gloriously captured in Islands In The Stream. George C. Scott and director Franklin J. Shaffner, who teamed so memorably in Patton, reunite in this compelling version of "Papa" Hemingway's posthumous novel. Scott plays Thomas Hudson, a sculptor whose self-imposed isolation in the Bahamas is ended by two forces: the visit of his sons...and the outbreak of World War II. The film is touching in its details of a father's love- and heroic in its defiance of tyranny. The rich sweep of a literary legend washes over Islands In The Stream.

In the beginning there was the legendary Bruce Brown and he blessed us with The Endless Summer. Next, with his son Dana, he awed us with The Endless Summer II. Then Dana, with his own son Wes, once again captivated us with Step Into Liquid. Now, with Islands in the Stream, a third generation of filmmakers continue the incredible journey, as Wes Brown and T.J. Barrack transport us to the beautifully magnificent waves of Tahiti, starring three-time Men's World Champion Tom Curren and six-time consecutive Women's World Champion (and Step Into Liquid star) Layne Beachley. Tahiti: dawn is breaking; waves begin to roll in. It is another incredible day in Paradise. Another chance to connect with Nature's power, to bond with that astonishing force, to stand atop a moving wall of water and channel energy into that majestic ride.
