THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU is an unforgivably bad remake of the 1933 classic THE ISLAND OF LOST SOULS, which remains one of the greatest films the horror genre has ever produced. In 1911, York, a British naval officer whose ship has sunk, washes up on a remote tropical island owned by Lancaster, a scientist who is experimenting on jungle animals, trying to turn them into human beings. Director Taylor utterly fails to evoke one iota of the macabre power of the original film, giving his effort a distressingly slick look more akin to a travelog than a horror movie. The only worthwile point of the remake is the special makeup effects created by John Chambers, who did similar duty on the "Planet of the Apes" movies. While his work is interesting, it is not complemented by the unimaginative direction. Miscast Lancaster fails to be a compelling figure — either tragic or malevolent — and the entire film collapses around him. leave a comment
