Yet another totally absurd bout of macho wish fulfillment for those frustrated by the American government and military's inability to deal effectively with terrorism, IRON EAGLE is actually more outlandish than most. Gedrick is a teenager about to go to his high school prom when he learns that his father (Thomerson) has been shot down near an unnamed Arab country for venturing too close to its borders. When the US government doesn't move fast enough to gain his father's release, Gedrick--who has free rein, more or less, around the base and spends a great deal of time in the flight simulator when it's not being used by pilots--decides to rescue his dad himself in a stolen F-16. Realizing that there is no way he will be able to pull this off on his own, Gedrick asks help from Gossett, a retired Air Force colonel who, although reluctant at first, whips the boy and his Air Force-brat pals into shape much as he did recruits in the film that won him an Oscar, AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN. Later, Gossett and Gedrick steal a pair of F-16s, and off they go to the Middle East. It really didn't matter that the film was totally jingoistic, fantastic, and moronic: IRON EAGLE was a surprise hit at the box office and spawned an even-dumber sequel. Director Furie is a workmanlike talent whose action scenes are competent but unremarkable. If you can believe that a young boy whose only flight experience was in a simulator could pull off what young Gedrick does here, you'll believe anything. leave a comment
