In TOP GUN American pilots blow a Soviet squadron out of the sky, but World War III doesn't begin because both sides keep it a secret. Apparently this sort of thing goes on all the time, because here it is again at the beginning of IRON EAGLE II, as an aerial game of tag between two Americans and two Russkies gets out of hand, resulting in the downing of one of the American fighters. Once again, none of this is ever made public. Right. At any rate, it seems the pilot who is shot down was the young hero of IRON EAGLE, in which he teamed with Gossett, Jr., to free his imprisoned dad from some unnamed Arab hellhole. In IRON EAGLE II Gossett is pulled out of retirement, put in charge of a group of misfits--including Humphrey, the survivor of the opening showdown--and told to team up with a squad of Soviet misfits at a base in Israel, where they will train for a top-secret mission to destroy a nuclear missile site in yet another unnamed Arab state. Naturally, tensions exist between the two teams, leading to a big fight, and of course one of the Russian pilots is a beautiful woman with whom Humphrey falls in love. After Gossett discovers that his superior really plans to sabotage the whole thing, he whips everyone into shape, and the combined teams penetrate the Arab defenses, successfully completing the mission. The misfits-assembled-for-a-suicide-mission plot is one of the hoariest in the war genre, best done in THE DIRTY DOZEN, which had an excellent cast and director (Robert Aldrich). IRON EAGLE II has only Gossett and filmmaker Sidney J. Furie, whose successes (THE IPCRESS FILE; THE BOYS IN COMPANY C) are outweighed by his failures (GABLE AND LOMBARD; SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE). Only the aerial sequences are commendable, and even these pale in comparison to TOP GUN. Followed by ACES: IRON EAGLE III. leave a comment
