In the grand European tradition of movies about horny middle-aged men lusting after indifferent younger women comes this sharp-looking tale of love and sexual frustration. Wildly popular Italian comedic auteur Carlo Verdone directed, co-wrote and stars as Romeo, a has-been pop sensation who's seeking his kismet: A blind fortune-teller once told him he'd find both love and riches with a poetry-writing singer named after a flower. A year and a half later, Romeo finds himself living in Brussels with an overbearing crooner named Marguerite (Andrea Ferreol) — margherita being Italian for "daisy" — tinkling along on the piano while she belts out endless renditions of "Ne me quitte pas" for teary Belgians. One night in a fast-food restaurant, Romeo happens upon the true object of his destiny and desire: Iris (Claudia Gerini), an eye-catching blonde who's just waiting for the right person to come along and jump-start her singing career. Romeo convinces Iris that he's just that person, and the two embark on a musical collaboration that soon leaves Iris with a recording contract and Romeo hopelessly in love. It's entirely possible that without Roberto Benigni's surprising American success, little would ever be seen of Verdone's work on these shores. That said, we should once again be thankful to the folks at Miramax — not necessarily for unleashing Verdone on us, but for introducing America to the fabulous Claudia Gernini. A few notable lapses in taste aside, Verdone's comedy is harmlessly goofy; at times it's even funny. But Gernini is simply radiant — lovely to look at and a gifted comic actress to boot. Also of note: Ferreol, veteran of such classic European films as THE TIN DRUM and Fassbinder's DESPAIR, who takes on Verdone and Jacques Brel with equal gusto. leave a comment --Ken Fox
