The logical choices for this remake of the 1926 picture based on a 1919 musical would have been Astaire and Rogers. Neither wanted to make the film, so the star chores were turned over to Milland and Neagle. Neagle, an English actress, plays an Irish girl who moves from the slums to become a Cinderella and play with the rich folks on the north shore of Long Island. Milland and Marshal both fall for her and battle it out over her affections. Roland Young isn't given much to do as the man who manages the fashionable couturier shop where Neagle works. Marsha Hunt is the girl who would like to marry Marshal, but he spurns her in favor of Neagle. Neagle is so Irish that we can barely understand her accent, and her grandmother, Robson, is even more Gaelic. Milland owns the business and is known as Mme. Lucy (in the 1926 version, George Arthur played the part as a gay). Lots of pleasant music, enough to warrant doing it again as a play many years later with Debbie Reynolds and Patsy Kelly. It was a hit once more and can probably still be seen in some small theater. There is a grand ball sequence shot in Technicolor, and Neagle's hair is bright red, something you might never know from the black and white shots. The film earned an Oscar nomination for its score. Songs include: "Irene," "Castle of Dreams," "You've Got Me Out On A Limb," "Alice Blue Gown," "Worthy Of You," "There's Something In the Air," and "Sweet Vermosa Brown." leave a comment
