A kind of hybrid, with the hip tone of Jean-Jacques Beineix's DIVA, the incest of Jean Cocteau and Jean-Pierre Melville's LES ENFANTS TERRIBLES, and the cross-dressing of Roman Polanski's THE TENANT, INVITATION AU VOYAGE is a psychological road movie about the 20ish Lucien (Laurent Malet) and his twin sister, Jeanne (Nina Scott). They do everything together, until they receive a sign from above--literally--when a hanging lamp falls into Jeanne's bathtub, electrocuting her. A distraught Lucien pulls naked sis from the tub, stuffs her into a cello case, straps the case to the roof of his car, and begins his odyssey across Paris. Although there are some nice moments, it's all a bit too hip and obscure to care about. California-born Italian director Peter Del Monte further explored the idea of dual identities in his 1988 picture JULIA AND JULIA. (In French: English subtitles.) leave a comment
