Raft and Bogart are recently released convicts with two goals in mind. Raft turns his back on crime and opts for a straight life while Bogart, a hard-hearted, unrehabilitated criminal, goes right back to his crooked ways. Raft tries hard to get a job but can't; when his kid brother Holden gets him a position, Raft is fired after the manager finds out he's served time. Holden wants to get married but he has no money. Raft learns Holden has rolled a drunk to buy gifts for girl friend Bryan. To get his brother enough money to marry, Raft joins Bogart's gang, goes on a few capers, and then finances Holden in a new garage. Holden gets married, and Raft later quits Bogart when he has enough money in the bank. Then Bogart shows up wounded, having been shot by rival gangsters Kelly and Lawrence. He hides out in Holden's garage, convincing Holden that brother Raft is still with his mob. Holden is later arrested for harboring Bogart. Raft visits Holden in jail and tells him he's clean; he finds out that Bogart has taken refuge in Bryan's apartment. Raft tells the police to keep Holden under protective custody and then goes to the apartment. He finds Bogart, but so do Kelly and Lawrence, and both Raft and Bogart are mortally wounded. The police then arrive to arrest killers Kelly and Lawrence. Just before they die, Raft and Bogart console themselves with the thought that they won't see the inside of another cell. Director Bacon handles the hot-and-heavy action well, and Raft delivers a solid performance with Bogart playing the stereotyped crooked pal and the 21-year-old Holden the predictable kid brother verging on the wayward. It's a mostly routine story but nevertheless absorbing. An inside joke of the film has Raft seeing Bogart and girl friend Patrick leave a movie; Raft looks up at the theater marquee to see the title YOU CAN'T GET AWAY WITH MURDER, a Bogart film. In a touching scene with his mother (played by the woefully miscast Robson, an excellent British actress), Raft jitterbugs to the strains of "Sweet Georgia Brown" (Ben Bernie, Maceo Pinkard, Kenneth Casey) and then slow-dances with his mom to "The Japanese Sandman" (Richard A. Whiting, Raymond B. Egan). leave a comment
