In this superlative screen biography of Marjorie Lawrence, the opera singer struck by polio who regained her strength to once more appear at the Metropolitan Opera, Parker, who was nominated for an Oscar (she lost to Anna Magnani for THE ROSE TATTOO), provides an excellent portrayal. Ford is the doctor who helps with her rehabilitation and becomes her husband. The two share the film's most moving scene: despite her pleas, Ford puts on a record of her singing, and Parker drags herself across the floor to turn off the machine. It is a well-crafted and sensitively handled moment and the story's turning point. The finale at the Met, where Parker performs in a special showing of "Tristan and Isolde" is magnificent. With her singing voice dubbed by Eileen Farrell, Parker's miming fits perfectly. She does eight arias, including "Musetta's Waltz" from Giacomo Puccini's "La Boheme" and "Habanera" from Georges Bizet's "Carmen." The classic song "Over the Rainbow" from THE WIZARD OF OZ (Harold Arlen, E.Y. Harburg) is also heard. A must for opera fans, the film won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar and was also nominated for Best Costume Design. Other songs and operatic excerpts: "Brunnhilde's Immolation" from Richard Wagner's "Gotterdammerung," "Seguidilla" from "Carmen" (Georges Bizet), finale to Act One of `Il Trovatore" (Giuseppe Verdi), "One Fine Day" from "Madame Butterfly" (Giacomo Puccini), and "Waltzing Matilda" (A.B.
