Reagan plays a stunt pilot who is delivering a bomber to the RAF. Upon his arrival, he meets his old commander, Stephenson, and old flying buddy, Lundigan. They've joined the RAF and try to persuade Reagan to do the same. He refuses as he's too much of a playboy. But that night when the Nazis bomb London in an air raid, Reagan sees a child killed. The brutality of the youth's death causes a change in the flyer, and he decides to fight the Nazis. Still unable to control his cavalier ways, he flirts with Bradna, causing him to miss a patrol mission in which a substitute pilot is killed. Stunned by the death, Reagan sees the error of his ways and decides to atone for his friend's death by bumping a buddy from a dangerous bombing mission. Reagan takes on a group of German fighter planes, shooting them down but dying in a fiery death. The war film is loosely based on CEILING ZERO, a 1935 Cagney film that was far superior to the Reagan version. Warner, like other studios during the WW II era, had full cooperation of airplane manufacturers for their flying epics. The Lockheed plant was located only two miles from the Warner lot and their Hudson bomber was used often in this and other war pictures. But there was little access to foreign planes and stock footage had to be relied upon. The plane Reagan flies in INTERNATIONAL SQUADRON was a Ryan monoplane, made to look like the British Spitfire. The film drew laughs in London houses because of the many obvious differences between the two craft. leave a comment
