Looking to the skies is no help if every government in the world is covering up UFO landings, which is the paranoid premise of this mundane chiller that pits kick-boxing commandos against ray guns and omnivorous aliens. Elite soldiers Shaun (Olivier Gruner), Dave (William Zabka) and Russell (Glenn Plummer) receive directives from the major (Ernie Hudson), not knowing they've been given false information about their mission's objective. They believe they're going to retrieve the black box from a downed US fighter plane before Mexican drug dealers can grab it. But the crashed aircraft is really from outer space, and the major gets his orders from UFO specialist Weber (Brad Dourif), who's spooked by the fact that four of his top guns were recently annihilated by a MIG from outer space. Ace-tracker Perez (Mark Adair-Rios) and extra-terrestrial expert Goodwin (Angel Boris) join the expedition, and Goodwin expects a big pay-off from Weber for locating the alien spacecraft and extracting a sample of the pilot's alien tissue. The real nature of the sortie becomes clear to Shaun's crew after the alien, which is very much alive, attacks Dave and inhabits his body; the creature subsequently assaults and body-snatches a series of victims. Miffed about being kept in the dark, Shaun and Russell negotiate a pay raise in return for their promise to help Goodwin and Perez keep tabs on the space-beast. Meanwhile, local drung-cartel leader Rosario (Stefan Lysenko) decides it's not in his best interests to have his lawless border town used for scientific research, so Shaun and his comrades are dodging bandito bullets as well as the faceless alien's sneaky maneuvers. Can the US anti-UFO brigade put an end to this space invader's unwarranted reconnaissance? Borrowing bits and pieces from PREDATOR, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS and dozens of other superior sci-fi hits, this low-budget chiller is a crazy quilt of genre conventions, but it's a satisfactory showcase for Gruner's macho self-defense techniques. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
