1937, Movie, NR, 71 mins

Based on the Gogol play, this is the story of a small Russian town run by corrupt officials. They hear that one of the Czar's inspector generals is coming for a visit. The foolish politicians immediately set about sprucing up the town, along with their already pumped up egos. Enter a con man, innocent of what is going on. He is simply passing through, but in their haste the politicians think he is the Inspector General. He plays along, taking the suckers for every last ruble he can. The film ends with the sharpy splitting as the real Inspector General arrives. This is one of the few Czechoslovakian films that was seen in America during the 1930s. Gogol's farce holds up nicely in its translation to film, with Burian playing his role for as many laughs as he can. A lesser musical version of the story was made in America in 1949 with Danny Kaye. leave a comment
