Inspector Gadget's Biggest Caper Ever: Review

Only slightly more animated than Disney's 1999 live-action adventure, this cartoon film is a riot of goofy heroes, candy-coated action and Rube Goldberg contraptions. Just as Metro City's Mayor Markham (voice of Richard Newman) thought it was safe to encourage tourism, the infamous Dr. Claw (Brian Drummond) escapes from prison. The key to making Metro City popular, the mayor thinks, is to make it look both safe and exciting. He calls upon Inspector Gadget (Maurice LaMarche) to recapture the escapee, and Gadget and his dog, Brain (Lee Tockar), also fortuitously happens upon an unhatched prehistoric egg. A flying lizard could become Metro City's star attraction! Meanwhile, Gadget's niece, Penny (Tegan Moss) is visiting her nerdy pal Loony Purkle (Sam Vincent), who's crestfallen because the growth-spurt potion he's concocted that only works in reverse. Then Police Chief Quimby (Jim Byrnes) announces that Dr. Claw has hired a henchman, Bomba Boy (Paul McGillion), to do his dirty work; naturally, Bomba Boy's first order of business is stealing the Lizard egg. Once it hatches, Claw will use the creature to control Metro City through fear. And unfortunately for the mechanically enhanced Inspector Gadget, the winged monster is fond of metal snacks. Can Inspector Gadget save Metro City's citizens from the voracious creature. Although its CGI animation is strictly run of the mill, Phil Harnage's chipper screenplay shows how kids and teens (Penny and Loony) can out think and out perform grownups and mines the humor inherent in the concept of the accidental hero who stumbles into saving the day. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
