INNOCENTS, THE
starstarstarstar
Based on Henry James' The Turn of the Screw, this superb chiller stars Deborah Kerr as a governess in Victorian England who's hired by Michael Redgrave to care for his two angelic children (Pamela Franklin, Martin Stephens) in an isolated mansion. She fears the house might be haunted, or is she simply insane? Kerr is on top form here, and director Jack Clayton takes perfect advantage of her respectable facade as her character wrestles with unspeakable turbulence just beneath the surface. Question: In the late '60s or early '70s I saw movie version of The Turn of the Screw that I thought starred Marlon Brando. I've never been able to find it on video. Am I wrong?Answer: You're only wrong in thinking that you saw a remake of the psychological thriller The Innocents (1960) with Marlon Brando. What you saw was a prequel. The Innocents, based on Henry James' novella The Turn of the Screw, is about a high-strung young governess (Deborah Kerr) who comes to believe that the children she's been hired to care for on an isolated country estate have been corrupted by the malevolent influence of their former governess, Miss Jessel, and her lover, the brutal manservant Quint. read more
