INNOCENT SLEEP, THE
starstarstarstar
Low-key UK thriller based on the 1982 Roberto Calvi affair, a scandal that began with the apparent suicide in London of an Italian banker and eventually implicated the Vatican, the Mafia and the Italian government. (Remember THE GODFATHER, PART III?) Down on his luck street person and sporadic drunk Alan (Rupert Graves) has the misfortune to be sleeping under Tower Bridge the night that Italian politico Cavani (Franco Nero), the English police detective in his employ (Michael Gambon) and a couple of thugs hang a man from its girders. Alan has difficulty convincing anyone of what he's seen, especially after he goes round to the police station and realizes that one of the men he saw that night is actually heading up the official investigation. But he finds a reluctant ally in an American reporter (Annabella Sciorra) working for a London tabloid, and together they begin picking at the knot of lies and intrigue upon which he's unwittingly stumbled. This bleak, cynical and deliberately unsensational conspiracy thriller never quite catches fire, despite edgy performances from Graves and Gambon, who oozes oily, understated menace. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
