This mutant-insect chiller somehow pulls off the hat-trick of splicing together a David Cronenberg-style horror film and THE BIG CHILL (1983). A group of over-achievers congregates for the funeral of their one unsuccessful college pal, Steven (Daniel Jenkins). Carl (Tuc Watkins) and Robin (Camilla Overbye-Roos) own a thriving dot-com company and Warren (Zach Galligan) is a TV star, but Steven was a lowly janitor at a medical research facility. Steven's other yuppie friends, Elliot (David Packer), Ellen (Lisa Ann Hadley), Mindy (Nahanni Johnstone) and Eric (Robert Duncan McNeill) join Steven's girlfriend, Jessie (Amy Jo Johnson), and Ellen's husband, Bob (Jack Mulcahy), for the wake at Carl and Robin's summer home. The mourners wonder why Steven insisted on holding his memorial at this remote spot — they have no way of knowing that Steven isn't exactly deceased; he's now the living-dead host for highly intelligent flies that he had the misfortune to encounter on the job. The genetic mutants eat the brains of a series of victims and hatch babies in their bodies. Able to zip from body to body, the flies infest Mindy, who in turn gives Carl an adulterous kiss he won't soon forget. Then Mindy and Carl target Robin. The survivors improvise escape plans that involve getting to car; unfortunately, Carl keeps attacking them — even after he's beheaded. To the grieving Jessie's complete and utter shock, Steven shows up with a belated explanation as to how he became a human-fly symbiote — it was a voluntary transformation, apparently prompted by resentment of his rich friends. Can plucky Jessie escape the deadly buzz that claimed Steven's other close associates? Writer-director Josh Olson's reunion-blues subtext adds texture to an otherwise standard-issue killer scenario, and his references to George Romero and various other horror mavens create a bizarre and claustrophobic ambience. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
