Crawford, a 15-year-old Indian boy, is told in a dream that his future lies with the most prized horse in the tribe. He ends up saving the horse from Indian raiders, names it Mecapo, and Mecapo in turn saves him when he is endangered by a wolf pack. A great friendship develops between
them, and, even though Crawford releases the animal in the wilds, it follows him back to the tribe. A lovely little story about loyalty and a boy's rites of passage.
