A huge commercial hit in theaters, INDECENT PROPOSAL should be able to crack two markets in the home video realm: as a feature film, and as an anthology of romantic screen cliches.

David (Woody Harrelson) and Diana Murphy (Demi Moore) are a devoted, financially strapped young couple faced with an unusual way out of their fiscal dilemma; a rich gambler (Robert Redford) offers $1,000,000 for a night of passion with the beautiful wife. If the premise is mildly intriguing, the execution is preposterous. This becomes clear after the first thirty seconds of soft-focus cinematography, over which we hear the following two lines of voiceover: Woody--"Losing Diana was like losing a part of me." Demi--"Someone once said that if you really love something, you should set it free." It's all downhill from there.

Director Adrian Lyne wastes no opportunity to show off Ms. Moore's pneumatic physique, which is the most noticeable feature of her performance. Robert Redford, meanwhile, seems fresh from the embalmer's studio--which at least puts his "young" rival Woody's receding hairline into flattering perspective. INDECENT PROPOSAL is as relentlessly entertaining as it is silly--so shamelessly over the top that you watch in a mixture of horror and delight as the drama unfolds toward a climax that is truly mind-boggling. leave a comment
