After mugging an old man, street punks Musante and Sheen wander off to the subway in search of cheap kicks. There they hold hostage a carload of 16 people. The punks intimidate the members of the group one by one, taunting them and exposing each passenger's weakness. Among the characters are a homosexual (Fields), an elderly Jewish couple (Gilford and Ritter), an alcoholic trying to recover (Merrill), and an angry black man (Peters) who enjoys seeing the whites taunted, but reacts much like them when Musante and Sheen attack him. Unable to take any more of the torture, Army private Bridges uses the cast on his broken arm to fight back. He is stabbed but manages to beat down the two punks. The train pulls into Grand Central Station, and two policemen enter the car to arrest the hoodlums. The passengers exit in an embarrassed silence, carefully stepping over the drunk who has slept through the entire episode. Though performances are uniformly excellent and the direction carries the film at a nice pace, the film is hampered by long episodes of character introduction. The camera work is excellent, capturing the frightening claustrophobia of the scene nicely. leave a comment
