This little-known and poorly made version of the famous "Bounty Mutiny" story features an early performance by Flynn. That's about the only thing worth watching in this unexciting adventure that contains a lot of "travelog" of type footage. Flynn, in a cheap blond wig, gives the only decent performance in the film. The story behind the film is far more interesting than the finished product. In 1930 Flynn was captain of a commercial boat in New Guinea. He was persuaded by Dr. Herman F. Erben (an adventurous scientist with an interest in documentaries) to sail up the Sepik River in order to photograph some head hunters. Two years later this footage was seen by Australian producer-director Chauvel. He was impressed by Flynn's looks and hired him to play Fletcher Christian. "[I was] without the least idea of what I was doing, except I was supposed to be an actor," Flynn later wrote. Flynn went on to a far better career than this debut might hint at. He also wrote a novel in 1946 titled Showdown based on the original Sepik River story of Erben's documentary shoot. The "Bounty" story had three remakes with Clark Gable (1935), Marlon Brando (1962), and Mel Gibson (1984) in the Flynn role. MGM used some of the footage from IN THE WAKE OF THE BOUNTY in 1935 for two shorts used in promoting the Gable version. leave a comment
