Seberg, an American studying painting in Paris, becomes involved with Forquet, who claims he is an engineering student. But just when they are about to make love in a low-class hotel, he confesses to her that he is only 16 and still in high school. Seberg leaves him and has a series of affairs until she meets Baker, a hard-drinking correspondent. Though he is constantly called away from Paris, she loves him passionately. After he is sent to Tripoli on assignment, Seberg's father, Powell, visits her and tries to convince her to return to Chicago. But she says no, preferring her life with Baker. Eventually, however, she realizes that this life is little more than a series of short meetings and long separations. She faces reality and meets Herlihy, a doctor from San Francisco. They marry and return to the US with the promise that every three years they will vacation in Paris. Though its beginning is too loosely episodic, once Seberg meets Baker the film is on solid ground. The cast is strong, and Seberg in particular handles her role with strength and sensitivity. After her success in Godard's BREATHLESS in 1959, she was a favorite with French filmgoers, and she is in fine form here. The camerawork is excellent--stylish and well edited without distracting from the performers. Herlihy would later write the novel Midnight Cowboy, the basis of the excellent 1969 Oscar winner. IN THE FRENCH STYLE is adapted from two short stories by the American writer Irwin Shaw, who served as coproducer and screenwriter. leave a comment
