A sudsy soap opera distinguished only by some fine acting, IN THE COOL OF THE DAY stars Fonda as a wife who feels confined in her marriage to Hill, though he dotes on her. The couple separates, then reconciles. Hill promises to give Fonda more space; they also plan to have a baby. Trouble brews, however, when Fonda meets Finch, a publisher pal of Hill's who is trapped in a loveless marriage to Lansbury. Lansbury has resented Finch and been unable to get on with life since an auto accident injured her and killed their son.
