Neo-noir hijinks. Legal eagle Rick Alvarez (Daniel Baldwin) is adept at clearing scummy clients, but gets himself into some very hot water. He's been having a steamy and extremely misguided affair with Catherine (Claudia Schiffer), the curvaceous wife of corrupt mogul Charles Wells (Dean Stockwell), and when Wells's car explodes near the Mexican border, Alvarez's adversary, Detective Sutton (Kim Rhodes), takes note of evidence linking Alvarez to the explosion. Sutton looks forward to finally being able to punish Alvarez for a career of sleazy tactics. Although Alvarez's associate Abby Berkhoff (Sarah Lassez) doesn't trust Catherine, Alvarez is putty in her expensively manicured hands, and when she drops by his holding cell for sex and a chat, Alvarez asks her to retrieve a roll of film from his impounded car. The photos on the role prove that Alvarez was involved in a fender-bender at a cemetery during the time Wells was being blown to kingdom come. Alvarez was visiting the grave of his mother, who had been the Wells family's maid — Alvarez is the product of an affair his mother had with Wells and believes that Wells killed her to avoid a scandal! Alvarez escapes from jail and heads for Mexico, where Catherine leads him a merry chase. She refuses to fork over the evidence that will clear him — is she a two-timing bitch or just a pawn in Wells' plan to fake his own death? The smoky, B&W ambiance of 1940s' noir films lent grandeur to the tragedies of gumshoes with feet of clay. In the modern light of day, such staple characters as the predatory femme fatale, the cynical cop, the deluded defense attorney and the sex-starved private eye can easily seem more than a little ridiculous. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
