This revealing film from Rainer Werner Fassbinder concerns Elvira Weishaupt (Volker Spengler), formerly a man, who has had a sex-change operation in order to please a man she loves. Lonely and desirous of love, Elvira is jilted by a live-in male lover, fails to communicate with her wife and daughter, and has no success in winning over the man that she changed for, Anton (Gottfried John). The story is as bizarre as Fassbinder himself seems to have been, cluing us into the darker side of his private life. Fassbinder directed, wrote, photographed, edited, and served as art director on the film, completing it in an intense 25 days. Only two months before production began, Armin Meier, a lover of Fassbinder's, killed himself (on Fassbinder's birthday), leading some to believe that IN A YEAR OF 13 MOONS was an attempt by the director to absolve his guilt. A provocative film for those already familiar with Fassbinder, IN A YEAR OF 13 MOONS may provide a bit of a shock for the uninitiated, especially during an extremely graphic slaughterhouse scene.
