Produced in 2000 and shown at the Sundance Film Festival in 2001 before going straight-to-DVD four years later, this murkily conceived and photographed thriller insists that its hero, villain and victims are all damaged goods. That list should include the screenwriter and his director-co-writer. Documenting victims has taken its toll on sensitive police photographer Joe McCormack (John Mellencamp, the rock musician). Although Joe chooses to throw in the towel, a narcissistic serial killer (Michael Zelniker) admires his work and doesn't feel that Joe should hang up his Nikon. This unnamed "fan" follows Joe to Rochester, New York, where prodigal Joe plans to make up for lost time with his ailing Aunt Cora (Louise Fletcher) and his mentally challenged brother, Sammy (Billy Burke). Enjoying the break from his dehumanizing career, Joe takes care of his diabetic aunt and falls in love with her caregiver, a deaf woman named Laura (the single-name Terrylene, nee Terrylene Sacchetti, founder of the Deaf Arts Councils). As the psychopath lurks in the shadows, Laura, a psychic intuitive, begins picking up premonitory signals. After experiencing a vision that foretells a grisly murder, she suffers a breakdown that requires hospitalization. Skeptical about clairvoyants, the cops put Joe and Laura under scrutiny. Not closely enough apparently: The killer slips into Laura's hospital room and slays her roommate just to show he can. he later pays Aunt Cora a visit at the same hospital. Striking closer and closer to home, the maniac continues videotaping his accomplishments for Joe's delectation, until Joe begins relying on his own criminal expertise in order to save his loved ones. Romantic thrillers bank on star chemistry, of which there's little here with fledgling actor Mellencamp and Terrylene, who's no Marlee Matlin. It's doubtful, however, that any actors could have salvaged this scenario juxtaposing a crazed camera-hog with a burnt-out shutterbug. leave a comment --rOBERT pARDI
