This concert film, shot in comedienne Margaret Cho's hometown, San Francisco, showcases her autobiographical riffs on fame, the surreal world of sitcom stardom and getting clean and sober. Standing on a nearly bare stage, Cho plays to a responsive audience, slinging stinging anecdotes about her family, re-creating the riotously peculiar messages her mother leaves on her answering machine, and lobbing verbal bombshells at smug Hollywood insiders. The show's centerpiece is the debacle that was All American Girl, a network comedy starring Cho as the rebellious daughter of a Korean-American family. A Gen-X practitioner of the George Carlin brand of deadpan observational humor, Cho finds wry amusement in her battle of the bulge (which peaked during production of the short-lived sitcom), her struggle to adjust to performing material by more mainstream writers than herself and her plunge into binge drinking after the series was canceled. The film is beautifully photographed, and the richly colored shots are given added visual interest through the use of varied angles and distances. Given Cho's no-holds-barred reputation, the great surprise is how gentle much of her material is; the biggest laugh-getters are her mother's phone messages, which are always unpredictable, often poignant and occasionally laugh-out-loud nutty. On the downside, it's slackly edited — comedy is, after all, all about timing and there are way too many lengthy shots of Cho waiting for her audience to respond; giving that they're flat-out adoring, there's never any doubt they're going to cheer her every word. Still, it's a chance for Cho fans who missed the live show to catch up, and a document of a talented performer at the top of her game. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
