An apocalyptic soap opera set in Hollywood, directed and adapted by writer Bruce Wagner from his own novel. The gilded life of the Krohn family comes crashing down right before patriarch Perry Krohn's (Frank Langella) 60th birthday. Krohn is the producer of a wildly successful sci-fi TV series called "Blue Matrix" (it doesn't take a trekkie to see what it's modeled on) who discovers that he has terminal cancer and only a few months to live. His son Bertie (Andrew McCarthy), an underemployed actor and recovering alcoholic/drug abuser, is involved in a bitter, ongoing battle with his junkie ex-wife (Gina Gershon) for their little girl's affections. He's also newly involved with HIV+ Aubrey (Elisabeth Perkins), a single mother whose health has begun to deteriorate after ten relatively stable years. Aubrey lives in fear that her sadistic brother, Zev (Ed Begley, Jr.), will try to take her young son after she dies. The Krohn's adopted daughter Rachel (Rosanna Arquette), meanwhile, discovers that her parents didn't die in an airplane crash, as she was always told; her father — Perry's brother — murdered her mother, then killed himself. It's like Strindberg on television, one character self-consciously observes, and there's much, much more grief in store. In condensing his highly praised novel, Wagner (who scripted the creepy Wild Palms) knits most of its sprawling cast of characters into a single, hugely screwed-up family. The decision makes structural sense, but it turns Perry Krohn into a tinseltown Job; at a certain point it's hard to take the parade of tragedies seriously. That said, Wagner's insider view of toxic Hollywood is bitterly seductive, and he's assembled a remarkable cast (many of whom have one or two scenes) who make the most of their mordantly funny dialogue. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
