Jill Clayburgh plays the Valium-addicted Barbara Gordon (who wrote the autobiographical novel upon which the film is based), a television documentary filmmaker whose apparent success masks a deeper failure to cope with life's complexities. Her live-in companion, Nicol Williamson, is an alcoholic, and the two battle verbally and eventually physically, until both are hospitalized for rehabilitation. Dianne Wiest plays the therapist who helps Gordon out of her addiction and back to reality. The script by playwright David Rabe trims Gordon's book considerably, and the film suffers from a resulting lack of depth (especially harmful is its failure to really get inside the main character's head), though it earnestly attempts to show the horrors of Valium addiction. The best thing about the movie is the controlled cinematography by Dutch master Jan De Bont. leave a comment
