An entertaining and heartfelt biography of songwriter Gus Kahn (Thomas) and his wife and inspiration, Grace LeBoy (Day). Kahn's life is traced from his Chicago roots to his New York rise with Ziegfeld. His temporary downslide is seen after the 1929 market crash and the departure of his wife. She returns, however, and stays with him until his death in 1941. The songs, all of whose lyrics are by Kahn, include "Ain't We Got Fun," "Ukelele Lady" (Richard Whiting, Ray Egan), "The One I Love Belongs to Somebody Else," "I'll See You in My Dreams," "It Had To Be You," "Swingin' down the Lane" (Isham Jones), "My Buddy," "Makin' Whoopee!," "Yes Sir, That's My Baby," "Carolina in the Morning," "Love Me or Leave Me" (Walter Donaldson), "I Wish I Had a Girl" (Grace LeBoy Kahn), "Nobody's Sweetheart" (Billy Meyers, Elmer Schoebel, Ernie Erdman), "Pretty Baby" (Egbert Van Alstyne, Tony Jackson), "Memories" (Van Alstyne), "I Never Knew" (Ted Fio Rito), "Toot Toot Tootsie Goodbye" (Al Jolson, Ernie Erdman, Dan Russo), "No No Nora" (Fio Rito, Erdman), "Your Eyes Have Told Me So" (Van Alstyne, Walter Blaufuss), "San Francisco" (Bronislau Kaper), "The Carioca" (Edward Eliscu, Vincent Youmans), "I'm Thru with Love" (Fud Livingston, Matt Malneck), "Liza" (George and Ira Gershwin). The only tune with lyrics not by Kahn was "Shine on Harvest Moon" (Jack Norworth, Nora Bayes). leave a comment
