This muddled feature from Michelangelo Antonioni (released in Italy in 1957) is the only one of his black-and-white films that centers on a male character. Cochran, a worker in a Po Valley sugar refinery, lives in the northern Italian town of Goriano with the married Valli and their daughter, Girardi. When Valli receives word that her husband has died, Cochran proposes marriage. She refuses him and takes another lover. Disillusioned in love and life, Cochran takes Girardi and begins to wander through the barren, weatherworn countryside. He meets an ex-lover, Blair, then service station owner Gray, and then Shaw, a field hand and prostitute. But he finds he cannot forget Valli and decides to return to Goriano, where Valli has moved to a different home and is taking care of another young child. During an anti-American demonstration at the refinery (the US wants to build an airfield there), Cochran climbs to the top of a tower and jumps--or falls?--to his death. Coproduced by an American company, IL GRIDO fails chiefly because of its cast. The two American actors, Cochran and Blair, seem to lack any understanding of the director's methods and deliver the least satisfying performances to be found in any Antonioni film. By contrast, the British Shaw (formerly a stripper) works wonders with the material she is given. In his next film, L'AVVENTURA (1960), Antonioni would overcome all of IL GRIDO's weaknesses. It is also in L'AVVENTURA--a film about forgetting--that Antonioni offers the antithesis to IL GRIDO, a film about the inability to forget. leave a comment
