Igby Goes Down: Review

Writer-director Burr Steers's 2002 debut recalls literate, melancholy coming-of-age dramas like The Graduate. Frozen out by his socialite mother (Susan Sarandon), overshadowed by his brother (Ryan Phillippe) and torn between a prematurely world-weary Bennington coed (Claire Danes) and his uncle's drug-addled mistress (Amanda Peet), poor little rich boy Jason "Igby" Slocumb Jr. (Kieran Culkin) has no idea what to make of his life, so he lets it spiral into disaffected inertia. Culkin's performance is a revelation; because he nails the emotional truth in Steers' quip-heavy dialogue, Igby's agonies never seem silly or self-indulgent.
