An interesting film from a provocative director, Guitry, another of his historical documentations wherein he comments on Paris' past in a witty and insightful manner. The film often has the air of spectacle while at the same time being very theatrical. Guitry continues to act in his
pictures, this time as Louis XI. Nearing the end of his long film career, which began in 1930, Guitry had to direct this picture from a wheelchair, retreating to a nearby tent occasionally to relax. IF PARIS WERE TOLD TO US was released a year before his death at age 72.
