Hawks, one of America's premiere directors, always felt that if a film had one or two exceptional scenes it would be considered above average and the director would have done his job. Hawks certainly did his job here, and so did Grant and Sheridan. Grant is a French officer and Sheridan a WAC lieutenant who are assigned duties together in occupied Europe just after WW II. They are at odds from the beginning, bickering and squabbling over petty problems but, despite this adversarial posture, they fall in love and decide to get married. Now their problems really begin. He and Sheridan decide that they will go to the US to settle down but the only way Grant can enter the US is for him to be considered a "war bride" (there being no regulation for "war groom"). Grant dons female garments, a WAC uniform no less, and a ridiculous black wig, to conform to US regulations and scoots about in a motorcycle with a sidecar, he in the sidecar, Sheridan driving, trying to get the proper papers signed. The sleeping arrangements present insurmountable problems. No military billet will allow wives bedding down with husbands and vice-versa. Grant's charade continues on board a troopship where the accommodations become impossible and the couple plays a game of hide and seek in and out of cabins and hammocks. There is no relief in sight until they reach New York and Grant can get out of drag. Hawks keeps the whole farce going at a brisk pace, dwelling upon the absurd to get the necessary laughs. Only the sophisticated Grant could convincingly play such an outlandish part. Oddly, he is a Frenchman thoroughly familiar with American slang but has trouble pronouncing the word "Massachusetts."
