A delicate charmer, sometimes precious, but nonetheless fine. Based on Kathryn Forbes's collection of autobiographical short stories Mama's Bank Account, this meticulously directed George Stevens film tells the heartwarming story of a Norwegian immigrant family making a go of it in turn-of-the-century San Francisco. Katrin (Barbara Bel Geddes), one of the daughters, narrates from her diary as the family's trials, tribulations, and triumphs are shown in flashback. At the center of the proceedings is the indefatigable Mama (Irene Dunne, giving one of her finest performances), keeping the house and her head while a dizzying parade of offbeat relatives and friends come and go, including Oscar Homolka (overacting), Cedric Hardwicke (wonderful indeed), Rudy Vallee, Edgar Bergen, and Philip Dorn as Papa. Forbes's nostalgic tale had earlier been brought to Broadway by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II (adapted by John Van Druten), and Peggy Wood later appeared in a long-running (1946-57) TV series based on the story. leave a comment
