Sellers plays a dull, honest schoolmaster in a small French town who suddenly finds himself jobless after he flunks the nephew of a local baroness. He soon falls in with a shifty city councilman, Lom, who sees Sellers' mild-mannered, unassuming character as the perfect front for his crooked wheelings and dealings. Lom hires Sellers and sets him up in a fancy Paris office as the managing director of his new company. Eventually Sellers learns he is being played for a fool, and he experiences a sort of catharsis. Tired of being manipulated, he decides to outfox them all and become a master confidence man. He succeeds beyond his wildest dreams and eventually takes over Lom's whole operation. A remake of the US film TOPAZE (1933), starring John Barrymore (the film was remade twice in France, in 1935 and 1952). leave a comment
