The third and worst screen biography of composer Stephen Foster (the other two films being HARMONY LANE [1935], and SWANEE RIVER [1939]). Shirley plays Foster, a dim-witted bookkeeper who writes the songs that make him famous when he isn't chasing Lawrence. She spurns him, and her sister, Christy, grabs him. Christy becomes the inspiration for the title song. It's too bad nobody connected with the film was similarly inspired.
