I Could Go On Singing: Review
Judy Garland's 35th and last film: sadly, it doesn't compare with her fine performances in other films. She plays a famous singer who goes on tour in England after her second divorce. In London she looks up Bogarde, a doctor with whom she had an affair some years before. Garland had his child, and Bogarde, married at the time, adopted the child with the agreement that Garland would stay out of their lives. Now Bogarde's wife has conveniently died and Judy quickly fills the void. The son finds out about his true parentage and will have nothing to do with Garland. Bogarde drives Garland to one of her performances, convinces her that singing, and not parenting, is what she was meant to do, and departs with their son from her life. Garland sings "By Myself" (Arthur Schwartz, Howard Dietz), "Hello Bluebird" (Cliff Friend), "It Never Was You" (Maxwell Anderson, Kurt Weill), "I Am the Monarch of the Sea" (W.S. Gilbert, Sir Arthur Sullivan), and the title song (Harold Arlen, E.Y. Harburg).
