We could, and very nearly did. Potentially explosive material -- the 1987 murders of 20 elderly Parisian women by a gay interracial couple -- is tastefully dampened by the arthouse stylings of French director Clair Denis (CHOCOLAT). In I CAN'T SLEEP, the notorious "Granny Killings" become a mere backdrop to the meandering story of a young Lithuanian woman (Katerina Golubeva) and her encounters with assorted denizens of the multicultural Latin Quarter, notably the mysterious Camille (pretty non-actor Richard Courcet). Tres atmospheric and thoroughly opaque, it's been mistaken for a masterpiece by critics to whom postmodern cool is signified by slick visuals and a virtually affectless acting style. It's a probable must-see for Kieslowski fans; for everyone else, it's a puzzle not worth solving. Featuring the most enervated drag show ever filmed. leave a comment
