Ferrer stars and directs in this screen version of the historic turn-of-the-century trials of Alfred Dreyfus. Dreyfus, a Jewish staff officer in the French Army, is wrongly accused of treason, sentenced to life imprisonment and sent to Devil's Island. Later the real traitor (Walbrook) is
exposed, but the military turns his trial into a whitewash. Soliciting the aid of some of France's most famous citizens (most notably novelist Emile Zola), Dreyfus's friends gain a retrial for him. Again he is found guilty; however, the French president steps in to pardon the noble captain.
