HYPE!
starstarstarstar
Four years ago, Seattle was where the home of the Space Needle. Now it's a rock 'n' roll mecca: You may ask yourself -- how did we get here? And filmmaker Doug Pray has an answer. His documentary, more than three years in the making -- three crucial years, as it turns out, in the development of the Seattle phenomenon -- looks at the bands, the scene, the personalities and the media coverage that ensured one small city in the Pacific Northwest a permanent place in the history of rock. It's far from a perfect film, but it's sharp, funny and pretty perceptive. Best of all, Pray doesn't accept at face value the cult of anti-hype: To cite only one example, his interview with former record company publicist Megan Jasper, who pulled one over on The New York Times with her smart-alecky and entirely made-up guide to grunge-speak, reveals all too clearly that she's simultaneously contemptuous of the culture of buzz and thrilled with her own part in it -- the very contradictory attitudes that drive American popular culture. Bonus: Footage of Nirvana's first performance of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" -- don't miss it! leave a comment
