This is a simple-minded but engaging comedy with Lefkowitz and Rogoff as two people in a patently Italian family. The script is derivative, and much of the technical side is poor; but there was a lot of love applied to this story of a paunchy 29-year-old who works at his father's print shop and still lives at home. He wants to make a go of the business, but his father and younger brother won't let him. His social life is no better as he has a shallow relationship with waitress Byrnes. It's an update of MARTY in that Lefkowitz is not unlike Chayefsky's memorable butcher, and his friends are younger versions of Mantell and the others. Lefkowitz eventually has a fling with actress De Coff, but she leaves him for a producer. He winds up the way he started--a loser. One of the first efforts for DeVito, who went on to television in "Taxi" and success in the movies, both in front of and behind the cameras. Lots of cliches, but just as many touching moments. leave a comment
