Mom's in jail, dad's dead, granny's a barkeep and 14 going on 15-year-old Marcus (Brendan Sexton III) is heading for trouble. So far it's just little stuff: He and his Lower East Side buddies pilfer sneakers, candy and CDs to sell to younger kids, smoke some cigarettes, drink a little beer and sit around their clubhouse studying dirty magazines. But there's macho talk about stealing cars and breaking into apartments, dope is creeping into their lives and the high-spirited roughhousing is taking on an ugly edge. Marcus dreams of abandoning the mean streets, perhaps for New Mexico, and for an all-too-brief moment it looks as though puppy love might turn his life around: Melena (Isidra Vega), a shy girl with an overprotective dad (Shawn Elliott), sees the sweetness in Marcus and harbors her own dreams of decamping to Alaska. Brendan Sexton III, who played the juvenile "rapist" in WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE, gives Marcus genuine depth: He's got the street swagger down cold, while letting us glimpse the gentleness and decent instincts beneath the bluster and the badass talk. First time feature director Morgan J. Freeman (no relation to the actor) conveys the sense of stifled desperation that can make New York feel like a grimy trap, rather than a land of limitless opportunity. But his script feels drearily familiar, and while it's OK that it drifts casually from scene to scene -- teen life all too often feels aimless and unfocused, and individual scenes are sharply observed -- the abrupt ending is a disappointment. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
