Five men set out from the city to do some deer hunting in the remote wilds of Arkansas. David Rand (Sam Bottoms) and his father Mason (Clu Gulager) are both experienced trackers and woodsmen. Their companions are Al Coleman (Ken Swofford), a good-ol'-boy deputy sheriff, Ralph (Mayf Nutter), his drunken brother, and Marty Adler (Joey Travolta), Ralph's loutish friend from the big city, who pretends to be an experienced hunter but who has never killed anything in his life. They reach the tract of land Al has bought--sight unseen and despite dark rumors--and pitch camp. Then they encounter two extremely nervous game wardens on horseback who warn them about poachers in the area and hunters who have disappeared in the past. DELIVERANCE, THE HILLS HAVE EYES, and TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE were the prime inspirations for this bloody adventure in which the group is pitted against a clan of bloodthirsty savages. The acting is all surprisingly good, especially from Swofford and Nutter. The evil clan is also effectively portrayed. Not nearly as interesting as any of its predecessors. leave a comment
