Hungry Hill: Review
Overworked dramatization of Daphne du Maurier's novel, detailing a 50-year family feud that spans three generations of Irishmen. Set in 1840, the tale begins as the patriarch of the Donovan clan starts a rebellion against the Brodrick family, which owns the copper mine on what was once Donovan property. In the battle the mine is burned down and the oldest Brodrick boy is killed. This leaves Price the head of the Brodrick family, and having little interest in the mining business, he spends much of his time courting local beauty Lockwood. They are soon married, and have four children, the eldest of which, Walsh, is spoiled by Lockwood. Eventually Price dies, leaving the greedy Lockwood and Walsh with control of the mine. Surprisingly, Walsh turns on his mother and she leaves for London, knowing when she's not wanted. Once in the big city, Lockwood turns to gambling and drugs for solace. One day Walsh bumps into his aging mother and he guiltily asks her to return to Ireland. She does and arrives just in time to see Walsh killed during a labor dispute with one of the Donovans. Lockwood has one of the clan arrested, but is eventually talked out of prosecuting by an elderly maid who implores her to end the feud. Lockwood does, and ends the film gloomily overlooking the mine.
