Hunger

Oscarsson plays a writer at the end of the 19th century who is literally starving to death and forced to eat remnants from the garbage in order to stay alive. He is eventually kicked out of his apartment and takes to sleeping on park benches. But all through this ordeal the writer never loses his hope or pride, almost always certain that some money will come his way from his craft. Even when given money by a woman who is attracted to his arty nature, he tosses the gift away out of pride.
