Midway through shooting Fannie Hurst's vintage weepie, Joan Crawford won the Oscar for Mildred Pierce, and what was a smallish role was suddenly expanded to make her a full-fledged co-star. She never looked more ravishing, nor was her acting ever more controlled. John Garfield stars as a tough, temperamental and highly ambitious violinist who is hired to play a party at the lavish home of Crawford, a wealthy dilettante trapped in a loveless marriage.
